I think Charley the protagonist is symbolic of the angst that the modern man undergoes.He just needed an escape route, that's when the sub-conscious mind of Charley travels to his 'waking dream wish fulfilment'world and he reaches his comfort zone.I think a bit of him is present in all of us.

can i know wat u dont understand in it so i can explain u it in a better way . Actually third level exists for people who wanted to get rid of life in 1950s. the 3rd level is a shadowy half world lying somewhere between dreams & reality. the hero, Charlie discovers a 3rd level which doesnt properly exists in his own time but is railways of the past leading away into earlier gentler time.
